Brigadier General Colin Luther Powell


Colin Luther Powell was born on April 5, 1937. Powell was also born in Harlem, in New York City. He graduated from Morris High School in 1954. Colin joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. In June of 1958 he received a commission as an Army second lieutenant. He served as a South Vietnamese Army Advisor when he was captain during the Vietnam War from 1962-1963. He was injured in Viet-Cong from stepping on a punji stake. As a major, he returned to Vietnam in 1968. From 1968-1969 he served a second tour of duty in Vietnam, and he was injured in a helicopter crash. He rescued his comrades from the burning helicopter. After his second tour in Vietnam, in 1971, he earned an MBA from The George Washington University. For 35 years he was a professional soldier, and he finally made it to the rank of a general. From 1972-1973 Colin served as a White House fellowship. Colin Powell soon became the senior military assistant to Caspar Weinberger (Secretary of Defense). He assisted Weinberger in the invasion of Grenada in 1983 and the airstrike on Libya in 1986. He graduated from Marymount University in 2006. He was a four-star general in the United States Army. He was also the first African American as the United States Secretary of State. Colin was also National Security Adviser. Colin Luther Powell made many ranks, received many awards, and served in many wars.
